Game Day - Go Honka!

Honka is my team in basketball and football, Blues in ice hockey!
www.tapiolanhonka.fi
http://esporthonka.fi
www.blues.fi
I've told you this already before.

Today is a BIG day for the flagship team of football Honka:
They play the final game against KPV for a spot in higher league - 2nd highest in Finland - for next year. The team was dropped to the 3rd level due to financial difficulties and for the same reason the old management was out.

Today, in less than 1,5 hours:

HONKA - KPV

At Tapiolan Urheilupuisto. I'll be there!!!

HYVÄ HONKA!

Hyvä Blues, Hyvä Honka, Hyvä Honka!

Yep, I'm still alive even if my words have not found this site.

The Blues
My home town sports flagship teams in the sports I'm interested in are all in interesting situation. Blues in ice hockey, Honka in basketball and Honka in football (soccer for some of you). Let's bite them one by one...

Unfortunately the Blues are now out from this year's playoffs. JYP from Jyväskylä beat them 4-0 in quarter finals hence no excuses, better team won.

Now the players like Bracken Kearns can focus on their family & kids. I happen to know this morning he was rolling on the floor with his about 2 years old daughter. He apparently was more on top of the situation than Tuomo Ruutu last summer when he lost his kid for a while at Hoplop indoor adventure park in Espoo...

I'm glad I went to the first playoff home game as the 2nd one I missed for a different culture reason, Ystävän Risti concert at church of Espoonlahti, lead by a local music industry 2nd generation legend Ile Vainio.

Tapiolan Honka
My basketball club Tapiolan Honka with long and glorious history has been back in the top league for the 2nd season after a visit at the 2nd highest level. The drop was due to bad financial situation of the separated league team. Now the team is on the last place in the league and the last team is supposed to drop one level down.

But what does the Finnish Basketball Association do?
They decide to expand the league from 11 to 12 teams. It has not yet been (at least not published) how the extra spot will be filled, while my best quess is they will keep Honka up and rise the winner of the 2nd level.

Why to keep Honka even if they should be dropped?
Well, it is the biggest basketball club in Finland with 1000+ juniors and 1 of the 2 teams in the capital area in the league. The other team, Helsinki Seagulls, does not have such junior operations... This is why I'd put my money on Honka playing the league also next year!

FC Honka
Another great club FC Honka with sad stories around the flagship team that has been separated from the main club running the junior operations. The league team lost its place in the league and now they are kicking off a fresh start from the 3rd highest level with new background team (you can follow them at Twitter). The team with mainly young talents completed with some experienced guys willing to take the challenge to boost the club back into the spotlights.

To make a one-man-statement, I will most probably get a season ticket for the upcoming season. The price also should be at the level that I don't mind if I miss half of the games...

So... 3 sports, 3 clubs, 2 names, 3 different situations. I love sports!!!

Now I'm off to watch FC Honka juniors game, missing an overlapping Tapiolan Honka juniors game - which will be covered by another one tomorrow.

Have a sporty weekend!

Thank You 2014 - Welcome 2015!

 The year in pictures and minimum words. Let's leave some space for your imagination! I kind of feel sorry for the ones who have not had the chance to be part of the trip. At least majority of you - I bet you recognize yourselves ;o)

Where did it all start from?
 From something unclear can be made something great!
 C'mon Baby Light My Fire!
 Let's check what's around and go for it!
 We gotta work for it - in the right places!
Let's enjoy the trip and have some fun!
 Enjoy the view and of course the company when ever possible!
 Remember to recharge the batteries - fill up the tanks!
 Celebrate the success and milestones!
 Challenge yourself!
 Enjoy the moment!
When you fill up the tanks, you can enjoy the ride!
And then work again, stop to think for a moment when needed!
 You can do it!
 It's not that high mountain to climb!
 You'll have friends to work with you if you are a team player!
 Know your hoods!
Take the moment!

Show your colors, commit to the team and the cause, everything is there for us to take!

Welcome 2015, I'm looking forward to the trip with you!!!

Adios España...

...hasta la proxima año!

So sad, so surprising after 3 titles in a row. Spanis team is about to be dropped out from the qualifying games in Football World Cup 2014.

Gotta say that both Holland and Chile deserved their wins, congrats!

So now focus is on Brazil - and Belgium until they are kicked out in quarter finals ;o)

Saludos!

FIFA Football World Cup 2014 - Let the games begin!!!

We have only some minutes to the kickoff of the football World Cup 2014 in Brazil!

There are so many interesting players to follow, some known to the big public and on top several rising stars. I'm really looking for the games - even though I will watch only some games from the 64 available ones...

The Finnish broadcasting company YLE www.yle.fi shows all the games in public TV channels in Finland and on top they have pretty good online services. If you understand Finnish, check the pages out.

My favorite is Spain. 6 years ago I was lucky enough to be in Spain when they won the EuroCup 2008 and I can tell you the party was BIG. And that was only the first one from the 3 championships in a row 2008-2010-2012.

If Spain fails, my second vote goes to childhood favorite Brazil, the hosting team. They have excellent players and home crowd, but also huge pressure to perform. 2nd is not enough for them...

The dark horse for me is Belgium with young stars. I hear Belgium is going bananas with the game fever and assumingly the (fool) Belge expect them to be in top 4. No way I say, max positions 5-8 so out from the quarter finals.

LET THE GAMES BEGIN, VIVA ESPAÑA!!!

Happy All Star Valentine's Day - Hyvää All Star Ystävänpäivää!

I came across with a fantastic-dirty-realistic picture about tomorrow Friday February 14th, the Valentine's Day. Yep, it is also the weekend of the NBA All Star Games played in New Orleans.

A Facebook site for basketball lovers posted this realistic picture, that nicely describes the (potential) difference of expectations that different parties involved might have.

If you have not been successful with your weekend arrangements, I have:
In next few days I'm going to watch a pro basketball game, pro football game, as well as a competitive junior football (soccer) game. With Mrs! ...not a bad Valentine's Day weekend I'd say :oD

What a day!

After some renovation & paintwork until fairly late last night, some wine was well deserved. Today has been a great day after a good long sleep (that is waste of time anyway...);
...After a quick small bite a quick workout at the gym.
...Cycle back home (in rain) for a breakfast & shower, to go out for the household community yard work, "talkoot", which is traditionally followed by BBQ snacks & drinks outside. Since it was raining, this was done covered by the rain at the car shelter. Niiiiiice!
...Sauna!
...Siesta!
...Chill out & light up ~30 candles, in- & outdoors.
...Prepare the best pizza in town.
...and now...
EL CLASICO!!!
Barcelona - Real Madrid, Barca leading 1-0 with a goal by Neymar at his el Clasico debut.

And writing this is the half time show :o)
To give you a taster of the home team, check out the ad by the home team sponsor.

To finish off, here is something closer to my preference...

Hala Madrid!!!

I AM PROUD / HAPPY TO BE A FINN - AS ALWAYS!

Today I can say I am more than happy to be a Finn, Finnish citizen living in Finland. I know that only some weeks from today I am fed up with the darkness, gray and wet weather.

To put things in perspective, at that point we are only going towards the time of the year when it feels the sun does not come up at all here in Southern Finland. For the guys living in Lapland, Northern part of Finland, it is not only "it feels like it" since up there the sun stays below horizon for ~2 months. Tough, hence we should better understand why we have one of the highest alcohol and coffee consumption in the world, as well as extremely high suicide rate.

Why am I happy then?

Let's not talk about the small home tasks, but I'm happy to say I have also used the vacuum cleaner this weekend.

WEATHER;
It is September and for example the average temperature last year was +12C. We have had all weekend +22 to +24C, sunny and nice. Fantastic!!!

FOOTBALL;
On Friday I got to see one of the best football teams and world class top players perform: Finland - Spain at Olympic Stadium of Helsinki. The goal opportunities were close to equal, Finland having two first ones, while Spain used their chances better and won 0-2.

Today I got to enjoy my son play a football game in sunny Lahti city. The game was played right next to the statue of Jari Litmanen at Kisapuisto.
Second game after his fairly long injury, HE IS BACK and I love to watch his games!

BASKETBALL;
Team Finland in Basketball, the "Wolves", lost yesterday their game against Italy, making a GREAT COME-BACK today and WON RUSSIA in the EuroBasket games after 2 overtimes!!! To put things in perspective, Russia has got 143,5 million people vs Finland's 5,4 million. Russia's latest big win was Olympic bronze at 2012 vs Finland has never ever won a medal in big games. GREAT GAME & WIN that takes Finland to the second round!!!

Seasons are starting at many levels so I also get a chance to watch some other games of interest to me. I myself need to be off the b-ball court for over a week so I gotta focus on other sports to consume the energy - no worries.

FOOD;
Yesterday I got to enjoy the best pizza in town with good company. As some of you know, that pizza is served at our place. Today I BBQ'd ~15 steaks, no need to say more I guess?

PEOPLE;
In addition to the ones mentioned above, several good moments, e.g. my daughter found a special dress for a special occasion to come. Today included an ad-hoc visit to a should-wear-a-suit-event wearing an outfit out of scope, feeling still good as the option was to stay out and see the key people in worst case only in a year or so. I also have had time for myself, which is good - thank you for the supporting / surrounding team :o)

Don't you think that all has been sugar & honey covered with flowers, while I will not let the downturns to impact too much. Dang, I will make my best to turn challenges into success stories...!

Have a fabulastic week you all!!!

Change of the seasons

Seasons are changing.

On Friday night came the first rains in several months. The snow cover is now down to about 30cm in Helsinki area. Spring is coming, the coming week even up North in Lapland the temp is expected to stay above 0 C. Let's see if I can get the backyard deck cleared from snow by Wappu, May first carneval. Now there is about 1m of snow that has come down from the roof.

Football season has started and the players and teams can show what they have learnt during the long winter months. Some Finland top league games have been canceled due to pitches being covered with snow. Well, this is Finland so it should not be that much of a surprise if you schedule games for early April. My main interest team started with a win - the team didn't play that well, still getting the well respected 3 points with 2-0 win.

Basketball season is getting close to end and playoffs and finals are being played. Both another of my teams and my main interest team finished with a small disapointment, having still a good season. Question is how could I take a smoother attitude towards the games? With deep knowledge and experience combined with strong sense of justice, living fully in the moment with passion and temper, not shutting up if things keep going the wrong way". The good thing is that in the core of the moments is a BIG sense of caring about the good, right things to happen... If you have no idea what I'm saying - don't worry, some do have an idea.

It is about the time to change also from winter tyres to summer ones. I was hoping I would not need to do it for this car as I was supposed to get a new one already over a month ago. Well, the Belge went on strike as there are plans to close down the factory and I'm one of the ones suffering. Well, It will be quite easy one for me as I don't have job or business on the line - just one car.

Shoe season will also change soon. In some weeks I might be able to take out the leather sole shies and have an option for the subber sole shoes. Niiiiiice!

Same thing with winter jacket - that will change into lighter ones.

If I'd have the time and chance, it would be fantastic to go up to Lapland for skiing! I doubt the slopes nearby Helsinki will stay open for long.

BBQ season started already weeks ago - at least feels like it. That will continue for loooong.

Candle season is also in the middle of change. They are not that fancy for that many hours per day as the daylight sticks around longer in the evenings. Still, candle season lasts 12 months per year.

Have a great season - what ever season it is!

Battle Mannerheim vs Litmanen

I have seen today two somewhat documentary or autobiography movies, one partly and another fully paid by us, the Finnish taxpayers via Finnish broadcasting company YLE;
  • "Kuningas Litmanen" about football player Jari Litmanen
Let's talk about the Marshal first;
It sucks!

The storytelling does not have any clear clue and it goes on for the full 41 mins without any real drama to the viewers.

Looking at ti from a quality point of view, as a movie even I can see it is low quality - and my view is supported by the media reviews as well as it can be seen in the "Making the..." documentary. Perhaps there is a link with the output and the fact that the local producer started his career in this project as a driver. Yes, the man who was the taxi-man for these Finnish guys.

On top, the ones who have studied the history more, have pointed out multiple errors in the fact telling - and honestly I was not able to find anything new from the historical or person point of view. To me that was the biggest dissapointment.

What was this then all about?
Please someone smarter tell me!
...the only motivator I've seen is that the YLE producer Erkko Ego-grower Lyytinen tries to boost his career - and ego. He says we should see the character Mannerheim from another angle. Unfortunately I was not able to link enough as there were too many contradictions and at the same time the content was very weak.

Enough of that, watch it and make up you own mind.

Kuningas Litmanen - King Litmanen;
I recommend it to all who are even a bit intersted in football or sports!

This movie lasted for almost 2 hours and when it ended, I felt like "gimme more, keep it coming...!". When the man himself goes to the places he has lived his football life and is interviewed about things he has never spoken about earlier, there is a clear additional value.

All of us can go to Youtube to watch the goals.

It is not often that you hear players like Xavi, Carles Puyol, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Danny Blind, Ronald and Frank de Boer, or Steven Gerrard talking such positive about another player. Litmanen played his biggest successesin Ajax in Holland, followed by not-that-great periods in Barcelona, Spain and Liverpool, England. He also did visits to Sweden and Germany.

My son is a young BIG football player and a fan, watching the world class players and knows a lot about them. After the movie I asked him "Did you know Litmanen was that good?". He said "No I didn't!".

Go and see it!

It's Culture Time - Football and Dance...!

The EuroCup 2012 in Football is on in Poland and Ukraine.We have already seen few surprises; Greece that was expected to be the weakest link played 1-1 with Poland, while the BIG BANG was from the red and white Danish dynamite that took 1-0 win against top 3 winner favorite Holland! I didn't see that coming...

Italia's Balotelli failed bad in his premium chance to score, while the substitute for him, Di Natale, scored a great goal against Spain only few minutes after he came in. The joy was short as Silva beautifully served Fabregas. For some reason the coach took Silva to the bend right after...

Great game with 1-1 result, but not as great as my son's game today ;o)

It has been a pleasure to follow him and the team develop in the hands of a great coach and supporting team. Today their good work was awarded with a rise to a higher league. I'm really looking forward to the upcoming games in the tournaments and the league.

Since life is not only sports, one should balance the culture with music and dance. Or what do you say?

...not bad at all.

By the way, who said a country boy is not pretty in pink...?

Fantastic Sunday!

What a day... Out already before 10 am - not to forget that the night was 1 hour shorter as we transferred to the summer time - to notice we got about 3 cm fresh new snow last night. Well, the ground was pretty, but it meant at the same time again some more slid, loskapaska.

Two junior football games and one basketball game as a spectator and one b-ball game playing to finish off the day. 3 wins, one loss so not a bad result. One of the games - as a spectator - was a final of the winter series and the guys got the biggest trophy! Congrats guys!!!

Also important was to have a nice sunday afternoon meal together. Hats off to the kids too, as they were able to do some school work on top of it all - as well as to chill out by the tv.

It was also funny to see part of the Blues team - yep, THE ice hockey team I've been talking about and am a fan of - playing football at the indoor arena between the junior guys games. Otherwise I would not have noticed them, but one can not miss Camilo Miettinen - or what do you say...?
He scored a nice goal in their game - and was happy to give autographs and let some fans to take pictures. Hope they can make some magic tomorrow against the season # 1 Kalpa.

The end of the day - just before writing this while watching the sports news - we had a great sanck meal with cheeses, bread, paté, pink bubbles (kts Ric...) so a good feeling with a full belly.

Sorry, I didnt have the energy to take up any additional work for today. Perhaps tomorrow nigh I need to take it back in order to secure all tasks are completed during next week.

Buenos noches - God natt - Good night - Hyvää yötä!

6 nights to go...!

Christmas is right around the corner, 6 more nights to go. And 7 for the ones who need to wait for it until 25th.

When I was a kid, we had a tradition to decorate the Christmas tree only on the morning of the 24th, not before. We got the tree the day before from the salesmen nearby and got it indoors to melt down - as most of the time we had snow. In our family, we have together with my wife created the tradition so that we get the tree and decorate it some days before Christmas. Today was the day - and now we can enjoy it longer.

Let's be honest, we also need all the help we can to cheer us up, it feels the sun is not coming up at all and it is raining sideways. This has been the horror image I was NOT missing while we were in Brussels. There the days are at least a bit longer...

Yeah, down side is that the winter lasts normally 2 days, 1 day at a time during the "winter season". On a good day it feels like spring, while on a bad day it is a looong grey fall day.

We had a busy day, starting with an early wake-up call to watch a football (soccer) game at 8 am. Again enjoyable moments - naturally as my son was playing - and they got a tight 1-0 win. OK, they should have scored few more goals from the places they had, but no.

After a short Sunday siesta it was time run some errands - with also a tree in mind. The options are to buy a tree from one of the pop-up sales spots around the corner, or from one of the bigger stores. I chose the second option as it had been raining a lot and I didn't want to get a wet-wet-wet tree indoors. It didn't harm that to my knowledge the price was also lower in the store.

We've had traditionally the standard tree, forest spruce - metsäkuusi. During our Belgium years we got used to the Abies Normanniana, somewhat Caucasian tree with longer, thicker and softer needles. The good thing with them is that they don't drop the needles that easily. The down side is that they don't smell as good as the forest spurce...
The standart spurce costs from about 15 Euros up to I guess 50, while the Caucasian ones are from 25ish to 60. I love the plastic net that they nowadays use all over to wrap the tree for the transportation. Veeeeery handy!

Well, this year our tree looks like this - every year a bit different as we have shitloads of decorations. Too much someone would say. And actually has said.
Sorry about the pic quality - it was easiest to use the phone camera as it is smoothly connected via bluetooth to the laptop I use to write this. No wires - no worries (I wish)...

Come on Christmas, we will be ready to take you - snow or not, we'll just put up more candles and outdoor fire!
Hyvää Joulun odotusta!!!

Hyvää Isänpäivää - Happy Father's Day!

Today many countries celebrate the Father's Day - Isänpäivä, and Finland is one of them. My day has been until now, midday, pretty good one. Wake up at a pretty good time not to waste time, and heading to the (indoor as it's +5C outside) football pitch for my son's football practice.

Today it was more than a practice: we played Fathers against Sons football match and I can tell you, it was FUN! The boys won by one goal, 7-6 I guess, but who cares (except everyone on the pitch) as the main thing was to get another father-son experience together. Naturally the mothers were cheering, I guess equally to both sides even though my wife said that perhaps next year they will need to start cheering the fathers as we are getting to be on the weak side...

Now after the shower I took the time to sit down on the couch while the rest of the gang are preparing a fabulastic brunch with karjalanpiirakka, munavoi and mud-cake. I guess there's some Mimosa available too, even if I target to play a basketball game still tonight.
Hyvää Isänpäivää kaikille, myös omalle Faijalleni siellä missä olet!
Happy Father's Day to all!
Hope also you get the treatment you deserve!

Did you know about the market place in Tapiola, Espoo?

Well, we natives do know.

Years ago it has been an active one, but nowadays there are only two (yes, 2) truly regular sellers. One is a gentleman who sells mainly potatoes & veggies. He has been there for 37 years - no wonder I remember him from my childhood.

The other one is the gentleman who runs the cafe. He is there 6 days a week until 2 pm and he has got pretty good meat pastry - lihapiirakka. I'd recommend to try it with the fried & dried onion. You can also as for fresh onion, pickled cucumbre, mustard and ketchup. Naturally there are also cinnemon rolls, donuts, pastries etc available.

It's a great place to have a cop of coffee, sweet or salty bite and a relaxing moment in a nice environment. Instead of getting the standard potatoes or veggies with preservatives, go to the market place and get them freshly taken from the local farmers. And I can tell you it's not about the price...

If you are around, go there so that they will be around also in the future!

Then shortly about yesterday's football game;
Finland played well against Sweden, controlled the ball a lot, got good chances to score - but didn't use them. Sweden did use their chances and won the game in Helsinki 1-2.

Good luck for the Finns to the next game in Hungary!

PS I'll post few autumn pics later - I've got some tech issues at the moment.

I feel I am in a wrong country at the moment!

Local tabloid paper in Finland - a free-for-charge version - had their annual restaurant food theme week/-s recently. The theme is built around 10 Euro prices. Sounds appeeling or what?

Well, I can tell you it is not as fancy offer setting as one would imagine. At least I don't count a basic hamburger, pizza, salad, basic Thai, or some other "well give you 2 Euro discount" -offers something to write home about. Surely you can brag about the amounts sold, but c'mon fellow Finns, be realistic about the price vs quality level in Finnish restaurants: it SUCKS!
http://www.city.fi/syo

We also had the car free day in Finland - the European common thing. I've been crying about this also earlier, but I guess it's the Lutheran side in us that makes us think we gotta do everything by the recommendations. NO WE DON'T, we can be smart and localize thing to make them work.

Sorry about bitching - I guess the gray day with sideways rain won't help to keep the positive stink around ;o)

Still, have a fabulastic rest of the week!!!

PS Is this our next Eurovision performer, bringing in the win after Lordi...?

PPS Tomorrow Friday Finland is playing against Sweden in Eurocup qualifications. Finland has been out for a while but the Swedes need a win - which should happen based on the previous game. Let's see if we can put some sisu and perkele on the pitch and surprice Zlatan who has been unhappy with football recently. No worries Zlatan, if you don't like to play just give back your salary and they will find others!

Light in the tunnel with Finnish ball sports

Finland's men's basketball team is going to the European Championships in few weeks. It is the first time since 1995 - which is hell of a lot better than in Football where Finland has never been in the games. Yet.

Today they won Hungary and still have one game to play. The game against Portugal will define which will go to the group with Spain, Turkey and Lithuania. Finland has got a win from the first game, hence even if Portugal wins by 12 points then Portugal will get the Spain-Turkey-Lithuania games.

Last Thursday HJK from Helsinki won Schalke 04 from Germany in one of the European cups. HJK was dropped out from Champions League and continued with these. The winner of the game pair will go to the next phase.

The starting point to the games was quite clear: Schalke 04 with 18 times bigger player budget. HJK is an semi pro team, while Schalke 04 is a true professional team - or do you think that Raul would choose any other way? Heck, after the game on Thursday night, many HJK players were on Friday morning at 8 am in the office for their day job. So much for the glory...

Ho, wanna know how the game ended?

HJK won 2-0!!!
If you wanna see th game, it is for a while available online here.

Second part is played this Thursday and I am soooo much looking forward to it!

PS We should not forget that Finland won the ice hockey World Championships this year...!

Helsinki Cup 2011 - Fabulastic!!!

If you love the European junior football, soccer, Helsinki Cup - link here - has been your thing during the past week. And tomorrow is THE crown for the week. But my heart weeps - as any sports parent can understand from the following...

My Main Man K was playing there and I can tell you he played a fantastic tournament with the team; they won their group without any losses - and with a pretty decent goal ratio. They got all the way to the semi-finals, that is playing for a place in the finals but then the nasty side of these tournaments stepped in:
The pitch was very small and hence the more skilled team (with good conscience) was not able to use their benefit and drawed the game.

Well, to keep the schedule it means directly penalty shots which is never, ever a sportsman way to finish a game but that's part of football today. They had won one other penalty shoot out in the tournament, but now mrs Fortuna was not on their side and they need to "settle" with bronze medals.

Not bad to be in top 4 out of 72 teams - not that far from the crème de la crème of their age group...!

The finals and the medal ceremonies are tomorrow and also the bronze medalists are expected so that's where I'll be tomorrow morning. Smiling!

Still few words about the time before the semifinal;
I was nervous. Perkele I was nervous. Even more nervous than ever before my own games - and I've had them all the way up to the top level in the Finnish basketball league. I guess the main issue was that I had no control what so ever to the game. I've been coaching my son in both football and basketball for years and helping out coaching my daughter's basketball team, but that's piece of cake as you can sense the team's temperature, mode and readiness to the game - and influence it. When you are at the sideline, it bugs me a LOT to sit back and enjoy.

Referring to what I wrote earlier, it is not helping that I put myself into the performance of my own games 120% and now that I'm on the sideline without influence, I am emotionally in 120% but as I should be a silent partner it makes me suffer.

When you add on top of this the following facts, it's no wonder that there is sometimes a bit of extra discussions;
- I hate unfairness, even if it's based on the referee's mistake
- I really hate incompetent, casual and negligent behaviour towards players who put in all they have. And when this comes from the person who in most of the cases is the only person being paid on the pitch, it just simply is unacceptable. And unfortunately I have seen it a LOT both playing and coaching - and also nowadays being a fan. 90% is just not enough!
- I have opinions, and I am not shy to share them. Hence in case of the above, it's difficult to let the bad performance go. And as I'm not in a position to handle it properly via coaching sessions, an instant feedback feels better even if it is not coming in the heat of the moment. Despite of the fact that one should let the players, coach and the referee do their job as particularly the referee is always right...!

Yes, I love sports in all of it's forms. Even when the almost nude ladies are sunbathing and rolling on the beach, getting themselves sandy... Yep, that's sports too!
Go sports, go K, go me, let's sweat and enjoy it!!!
PS Tomorrow - or most of you today - Saturday is the finals of the Helsinki Cup. If you are in Helsinki, why don't you go there to enjoy a moment of fresh air, sports feeling and some enthusiastic football - that's different from what you see on TV!

Firstly, I'd like to tell you how fantastic it is to watch your kid play sports. Or perform arts. Or do whatever they feel confident and happy enough to show to the other people! In principle, hatever they are doing, where one can clearly do well!!!
I just love it - even more than to playing myself and I gotta tell you I LOVE TO PLAY SPORTS!!!

Basketball is my game and Honka jersey is the only Finnish club jersey that I have worn in any official games, both basketball and football. It all started with the elementary school football team where I was asked to join the local club Honka. This version is a shortcut (perhaps I'll tell you more later on...), but after playing for a while with the team mates who also played basketball, they asked me to join in the b-ball team.. What a surprise, I was a head taller than the other guys... - but on the other hand, my skills were not that good to start with.  sit back in a relaxed moment and have FUN!!!

With heavy shortcuts in the story, I chose basketball at the end and the only time I had (on top of the Finnish team invites) to give a serious thought for an option to play in another team an official game was in Belgium. And that was soooo much fun but at the same time realisticly out of scope at this age from what  most of you can think about. Let's leave the details for the later "Sports History of Me ;o) ..."

To overwrite what I just said in the first part about kids' sports, actually my feelings towards my own kids's performance is a lot more than liking: I feel in my guts what they are doing and since they are my blood, you can imagine the adrenaline going on in my body...

I live the game of my kids even more full than I live my own games. And I can tell you that I put 120% of myself into the games - both physically and otherwise.

One thing that I'd be happy to set aside in my mind is the referees. No matter what the calls or their approach is, I should act accordingly and remember that they are the ones "mastering" the game and keeping it in balance. I hate to see the ups-and-downs in the quality of them, but ref's, please make sure that if you put on a jersey of a referee, you are as well equipped and motivated as the guys/players are!!!
...and in some cases you are the only one being paid for the job so please respect the honor.

I have a story to tell with the sports, I guess what made me what I am sportswise, but let's save it for later on. What I can guarantee you, is that my story is not as exciting as the one of Seppo Kuusela's autobiography "Hyppyheitto". The key messages after getting half way of the book are;
"Sports - that's my thing / Playing/training activity / Multiple sports - don't stick with one sports or you'll be lost! / Training for myself - not for anyone else / Have fun with the training / More fun than ever - as I love sports...!!!

But the planning of how to tell the story will get further in Ribis in Tapiola, Finland.
