Eurovision is not Punk!

Finland tried to make the same trick as we did at 2006 when we made history by having the first ever hard rock song (by Lordi) to win the Eurovision song contest - and the first and so far (and many years to come) the only Finnish winner of the contest! This time we tried to do the trick with punk song - and that's not all, it was performed by a band called Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät - a band made up of members with learning disabilities.

BBC - among many other world media - wrote about them, link is here, and a photo by BBC below;

For their performance, check out Youube...

This time I don't have favorites, let's see how high will my interest be when the show kicks off at 10 pm Finnish time, that is 8pm UK time and 9 pm Brussels time - in about an hour!

Let the games begin!!!

Grannies didn't win - Heja Sverige!

It was close, but not close enough! Still the grannies apparently won some cash to fix their home village church that Stalin had destroyed. Good for them!

I've been wondering why the Eurovision song contest has become a tradition that stuck. Years ago we had nights out with friends to watch them and have a party. Well, with kids and age that was not sustainable solution, but during the Brussels years it was a good way to keep up with the patriotism.

Not least when the Lordi came on - and won... That night we happened to have an American style baby shower party to go to. This time it was with men too. The host family was American-Armenian-Dutch, so Eurovision was part of the package. Somehow during the evening it became clear that the Lordi is winning and Madam Hostess was so happy as she was a big lover of Salmiakki Vodka!

I you wanna check what I've said about the Eurovision earlier, check it out from here.

God natt, sov gott!

Who's gonna win?

I said the grand moms will NOT win the Eurovision 2012 song contest, but now I claim the other:
I say they will win and make the similar protest win as Lordi few years ago!

Go grannies!!!

Eurovision Song Contest online commenting - or not?

I WILL TRY TO COMMENT ALMOST ON-LINE. STAY TUNED...

England;
Oh yeah - cool stuff! At least if you were at 70's digging this guy, just like my Mom - Enkeli Pumpernikkeli, the man... Too bad Äiti you are not here to enjoy this with us!
Pumpperi, sorry to say, but thanks for the song and welcome back next year - which you will not do I guess.

Hungary;
Hmmm... Who's gonna miss this one? Nice energy & Euro-pop, but where's the beef.

Albania;
C'mon, let's keep the Lords of the Rings out of this competition! Jacket from Simon Lebon or what was his name again...?

Lithuania;
Blindfolded? Well, good for you - you didn't miss that much. Gotta say it picked up towards the end, but max Top 10. Best piece the background dancers where ever they were behind the screne.

Bosnia + Herz...;
Pretty, well thought  wind machine timing, fancy lights, soft lyrics - and a quaranteed Eurovision ballad. Sholder pads were HOT! That's it.

Russia;
 THE BABES!!! Incredible, these babes think they can reduce the drinking of our men by getting a new church in the village and singing. Good stuff, they have back-up vocals on-site in case one of them ends up in ...hospital/grave/parties... Top 5, if not the Lordi-type-surprise-winner!!!

I bet these ladies will make almost - not quite but almost - the same as Lordi did at 2006. These ladies are HOT and I said it when I heard about them for the first time. Go babes, leave the Euro-funk and stick to your guns!!!

Iceland;
Another standard Eurovision looking bunch - and not that surprising they have done their homework and are following the Ireland  (and actually previous Norway) winning feeling. Why won't they. Potential winner!

Cyprus;
Ok, the first sexy show of the night. Standard wanna-be-disco-hit with the looks, moves, rhimes etc. Best part the dancing babes...Can be Top 10.

 France;
Yes, quality is in place and catching tunes, but can one win the competition?Quite sad they didn't leave a true marker. I say NO.

Italy;
Boom-boom-boom: GO!
Wanna-be-Ms.Winehouse??? Good stuff that can have a chance to make it all the way. Still, no chance to make any Waterloo hits.

Estonia;
As boring as Finland, that did not make it to the final. Good night, sleep tight.

Norway;
Good for the Prince of Norway, not all of you can make it to the Eurovision, but what's new...? I can claim we have heard and seen similar stuff each year by 5-10 countries. He has well earned his spot on stage, just like each oil millionaire.
...ever heard Gaga's song "born this way"?
Still, Top 10.

SIDE COMMENTS...
Many thanks for the mid-talk-interview to Mr Engelbert Humberdikkkkkkkeli or pumpernikkeli....

...and now the hosting country Azerbaidzhan - or Azerbaijan in English;
Many thanks for a touching performance. Nice color play with the dress and all, but can the little man at the background make and break it again? Music does not stop it, so why won't we have another magic next year at the same arena? Still, I won't put my money in it.

Romania;
Video appeals me, but the music, interesting stuff. Sexy, show, Euro-pop-rythms, and traditional Eurovision themes. Many thanks, but no chance in the competition.

Denmark;
Music familiar from radio songa, visuals from other Eurovision performances along the years, pretty babes, nice haircut at the base and attitude at the drums, but sorry you will be out of Top 10.

Greece;
A-a-a-aaa-a-I've-got-a-short-skirt-why-won't-you-forget-our-economics...
Say-no-more: Entertaining Eurovision, but no chance for the playing lists or Top 10. Sorry.

Sweden;
I am looking for this one!!!
Hmmm, I think I heard this at the beach-type-night-club at Berlin yesterday. And if it was not that, then what's new here? Audience here sais the dance moves would also be potentially borrowed. Quality is high, particularly I love the fake snow - even if we would have the real one available - that makes me wanna go for the viking approach ;o) Heja Sverige, at top 10, but not all the way.

Turkey;
Thank you, lookes good and see you next year, sail safely!

Spain;
Another Ireland-type ballad with a voice, while I would have wished from this stunning looking lady a bit more lively show to hit the jackpot! Top 10 potential and why not for a future career. Hmmm, did we meet last August at Fuengirola?

Germany;
C'mon man, leave the hat away!
Teenager asked if this is Cold Play ...or what the heck it is. At least at the end, just like Lordi...? I heard Germany is the only world, that has been in all Eurovision competitions. Why?

Malta;
Nice footwork, fantastic lastname, but where is the real packet from the singer? Drummer and some others showed off, but perhaps you could have done a bit more than the shout-out, or what do you think? Sorry, out of Top 10.
Regards to my b-ball friend, u o me 1 game!

Macedonia;
Stop snoring!!! This is great if you are at all interested!
I am in the middle of reading the contingency of Snabba Cash & Stockholm, hence the language has got the extra tone. Music wise, I say a little chance for Top 10 if the Nightwish style appeals.

Ireland;
Before the start, Top 10.
...after the start: r u serious, same guys again? Any other changes?
Well, Johnny Logan won the shit several times and I will never forget the 5 am beer with him at a private gig somewhat 22 years ago.

Serbia;
I have many personal symphaties to the country, but never visited. Yet.
Heart touching show, that leaves the listener with the feelings. But why the zombies walking at the back? Good stuff, can make it to the top 10.

Ukraine;
Why did she come in her Las Vegas -type wedding dress and Kukkenhof-type of hair-piece?
Good pack, energetic guys on the trumpets etc. Nice!

Moldova;
Oh boy, have I increased my Moldova knowledge in the past days. This confirms that they have - just like all other countries - pretty women and capability to make music, but let's be realistic: Finland was out of the final and Moldova is out of the Top 10.

OK, I'll leave the final judging for the judges and decision fo buying the music for you. Still, please do not be stupid and do download the music only from the sites with credible background.

Kiitos - Gracias! Let the best song win...

The Winner of the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 is...

...not Finland!

I gotta admit this is a fact. Again. The only time this proved to be untrue was at 2006 when Lordi won the contest. And that will stay the same also after this year's contest.

After not watching that closely the qualifying rounds - that have been said to be a bit complicated - I was not that happy to see the "best" six that made it to the final of the qualification round. Sad but true, in my opinion, none of them have the potential for more than few random points from the actual games.

What is surprising, both members of the family who were follwing the show, agreed that the lady perfoming in the second(!) official language in Finland, Swedish, was a strong candidate. And I'd say luckily she made it, good luck for the games Pernilla!

...if this guy would have made it, I would have a heck of a lot of explanations to give even after Lordi...

No worries, the games are on again in May and we'll be watching, no matter if Finland will get zero points or not ;o)

By the way, The Rasmus made their come back with a new single "I'm a Mess", that I unfortunately can't link with this PC. The song was not first a slam-to-my-head, but it did have some catching elements...

Have a great weekend!

PS C'mon Blues, keep your head up - giving away the game 8 seconds before the end is not what we wish to see...!

Go Eurovision-Finland!!!

Guys, I can take my hat off to most of the countries for the effort and for some even for the musical performance - not that I understand the stuff - but on the other hand I'm on the same starting point as majotiry of the spectators.

That means if I think - or if you wish to say so "stink" in a funny dialect - Finland is good, it means in average someone else also thinks the same.

Having just listened to Italy and United Kingdom songs that made it directly to the finals, I can only congratulate the professional song writers but sorry mate / bella, it's not enough for me. Let's see if I'm alone with my thought!

The States of America & Eurovision

It was North Dakota!

I've been wondering what is the missing state from the flag counter as I've had there only 50 out of the 51 available.

On 11th May someone from North Dakota came for a visit so now the list is complete all the way from Alaska, via Hawaii and New York to Florida.

You can check it out by clicking the flag counter on the left side and then "COUNTRIES". By clicking the "+"-mark next to US flag you get visible a list of all 51 states and flags available. Now they are all there. UGH!

Eurovision song contest final is tonight!

Tonight is the night of tops and flops. And from experience I could say mainly flops as in average the Eurovision song contest performances are more show and comedy than music performance that can be considered art.

Once Finland has been successful and won the contest with a bit unusual song performed by Lordi. The video is worth watching - and I guess it is not a surprise to many of you that pioneer of masks KISS was Mr Lordi's favorite in youth.

I said earlier that I was quite sceptic about the guy representing Finland, but that changed when I saw his performance. Pretty good, unique performance that stands out from the majority of the songs.

What is unlucky for him is that he is # 1 so he starts the evening. If he would come up after 10-15 tättärättätättärättä-songs the effect would be even stronger. Lets hope for the best - and don't forget to follow the lyrics, there is a story...

So Eurovision final is on tonight but tomorrow is the ice hockey final in the World Championships, Finland is playing dear Sweden. I am really looking for the game!

Hyvä Suomi!!!

Ice hockey & Eurovision is on!

Tonight is the night for both Eurovision and ice hockey World Championships. In both events it is not day 1 of the games;
In ice hockey is the quarter finals where yesterday Czech Republic sent team USA home and our neighbors Sweden did the same for Germany. Tonight Finland is against another neighbor Norway, that has performed quite well in the games but – sorry to say – tonight it ends for them. Finland will win 7-2. Game is on...!

Just like Finland scored big time on Tuesday night in Eurovision semifinals: the young guy who I was about to send directly home had quite a show – totally opposite to majority of the songs – and won the hearts of people and earned well a place in the final on Saturday. He is actually the first one to sing so don’t be late!

If you wanna check out the song, here you go! And don't forget to follow the story he is telling...

Hyvä Suomi!!!

And the winner is...

...Germany with a song that I rank as "pretty good for a Eurovision song"!

What comes to my favorites: They all were in top 10! I bet you had doubts about my motivators to nominate these countries but as this is a song contest, I evaluate purely the musical aspect ;o)

Let the show begin...!

Tonight is again the night for some good musical and visual entertainment with a bit of cultural flavors: Eurovision song contest. Last year a pretty-boy from Norway won so Norway got to organize the event this year.

As I said some days ago, Finland is out from the final - just like Sweden for the first time. Gotta say I was again surprised to see which songs made it and which were dropped out. Matter of taste, but I can say there is some good fun to watch tonight. In my books this means also some laughter...

My personal favorites are Armenia and Romania, but I give some points to Ukraine too. Check it out and you will understand, fantastic performances :o)

Take the rythm from France song "Allez! Ola! Ole!" which is not a traditional Eurovision song but more for the upcoming football Worldcup. Well, I don't know how far off the target audience ONLY successful Finnish performance "Hard Rock Hallelujah" by another pretty boy Lordi was, but for some peculiar reason they won...
 In my mind Greece has got the best message of the night with a song titled "Opa", which is the same as "Hölökynkölökyn" in Finnish.

Opa - Sláinte - Cheers - Kippis - Skål - Sante - Na zdravi - Prost - Salud - Hölökynkölökyn - whatever...!

Finland: Zero (0) points!

Finland is out from the Eurovision song contest this year. Our pretty blonds did not impress the other countries (at least not enough for votes) so the show is over after yesterday's semifinals.

I can't say we would have deserved a place in the final - same as with Lordi - but I can say there were few songs that I don NOT want to hear again. But I will, since I''m gonna watch the final, have a glass of wine - or two and will have a good fun watching the show.

Here is a link to the Finnish performance. It was good enough for these guys to make a copy-cat version...
(the copy-cat version has had problems but it has got over 165.000 shows so it should be good to watch)

Now I know better!

Good morning,

Before going further, I wish to complete previous posts about Bääbs; Unfortunately Bääbs did not make it to the next round - unless the wild card comes to her - but despite of the outcome I am extremely proud of the show that was put together self produced, without any record company support.
Well done!!!

Then to the blog-topic;
I have been wondering if there are people who truly visit and read what I write. Ivanka is the only one who dares to comment (you know, you can post comments anonymus and without registering from the end of the post) and I only now and then hear direct feedback from some of you.

Feel free to post comments or give your views directly to me!

After I added the gadget that shows the flags and counts of visiting countries together with the total page downloads my confidence in you raised. Already over 100 page in a week, since I published it on 8th.

Thank you for reading, give your comments and stay on the channel - something new coming up again soon!

Bääbs Show can begin...

Continuance to the previous;

We are ready, already put the champagne in the natural cooler at the back yard.

Yes, it is real - the cooler is in the middle, next to the iglu that has got light inside. Just to clarify, this is different from the previous iglu - the one K made in Levi, Lapland.

-18C outside so the cooler is very efficient...

To complete tonight's Bääbs-packet, here are the instructions for voting (only in Finland).

Tässä tiedoksi äänestysohjeet:
Soita numeroon 0700-717-03 tai lähetä tekstiviesti 3 nroon 17132.
Äänestys alkaa suoran lähetyksen alussa ja jatkuu lähetyksen loppupuolelle asti.

Tekstiviestin hinta on 99 senttiä per viesti.

Live - tonight - from Tampere: Bääbs!

At her website http://baabs.fi/ scroll down and you can check out the video of the performance - but it is different from the show tonight.

Also English pages are available so go ahead and get into the mood, let's see if she can make it to the next level. However, for a self-produced piece it is FANTASTIC achievement that she has made it even this far!!!

Hyvä Päivi, Go Bääbs!
Enjoy your moment in the spotlight!

Go Bääbs

Like I said earlier I have higher interest to the Finnish qualification to the Eurovision song contest this year.

The reason for the interest, Bääbs, has done apparently better then ever expected but is this Friday facing the next phase of the qualifications. She is performing on stage and I am really looking for it!!! At Facebook there has been fan groups where Finns have been able to find instructions on how to vote etc. That's today's marketing ;o)

Go Päivi - I mean Bääbs - on Friday at Finnish TV2, 9:00 pm!!!

Eurovision is coming again - with highest interest ever!

Most of my adult life (if I have ever had one...) I have been involved with Eurovision song contest. Most of the time it has been another good reason to get together with friends, eat some food and since we are Finns - have some drinks.

Most of the time it was focusing more on the party, where the Eurovision was only a side track. Frankly, in scale from 1 to 10 my interest towards Eurovision - Euroviisut like we call it in Finnish - has been somewhat 2. Along the years it increased a bit, but really not that much.

That was the status quo until my patriotism grew into even higher level alongthe move to Belgium. And all of a sudden we are invited to a American style baby shower party that is mixed with - Eurovision song contest! And you would never ever quess the nationality mix of the hosts; Dutch-Armenian-American.

Among the hosts were basically all nationalities from England to Russia to Scotland and via somewhere in South America and Asia to Finland. I had heard that Finland´s song was something people were talking about and I had heard pieces of it, but as always starting point was to accept Finland´s defeat.

The evening gets going and the Eurovision songs are performed. Now and then one of the songs get more attention - mainly based on the nationality of the audience. All of a sudden the points are getting in and Finland is in the lead. My comments are along the lines "don´t worry, we will get back to our level soon".
But we won´t and Eurovision has changed forever. The Lordi has won with a what-ever-heavy-rock-song "Hard Rock Halleluja"! Since then the share of the rock/ metal songs has increased. In addition to the sex shows...n

During the past year we have followed the national song selection of Finland, England and Belgium, and I gotta say most of the time I have been stunned of the results.  I guess the worst was 2-3 years ago, I guess 2008;
They had a perfect Abba-goes-modern performance and song that most likely would have made it to the top, but what do the island people vote for? The flight attendant show, the type so many countries have tried and failed with a BIG crash. So did England.

Also the selection criteria has been a mystery sometimes, since clearly the people´s voice does not get the best song to the contest but giving the full decision power to professionals is not an option either. I guess the truth is somewhere in between.

This time I have the highest interest ever, and today came a positive surprise already for 2nd time;

I have a family connection to a Eurovision performer that has come through from the open series:
267 demo songs were sent to the open series and a pro jury selected 30 of them to a public vote. The results were published today and - the "family song" by Bääbs was one of the 3 songs that made it to the Finland´s final!

I didn´t listen any of the other 29 songs, but I gotta say that the Bääbs´s song "You don´t know tomorrow" is a type of a song that we have seen performing well in Eurovision finals.

There is just one trick on the way; The rest of the 15 Finnish finalists are professionals that the Finnish national broadcasting company YLE has invited.

So now it is time to start planning Euroviisuvalvojaiset already for January when the Finnish semifinals start ;o)
Here is a link to the homepage, the song link is not active for the moment but stay tuned...
