Rob Gonsalves - Art playing with our minds

Rob Gonsalves is a Canadian artist who makes art that plays with our minds. The optical illusions are extremely fascinating. I'm not sure for how long I would like to keep one on my wall though... Not even if they are great!

Check out a selection from here:

This one is my favorite out of the ones on the site:

If you want to buy his stuff, you can start from here. They have made also a yearly calendar.

70 years from D-Day - Normandian maihinnoususta 70 vuotta!

Attention - Huomio!!!

70 years ago, on the 6th of June, the allied forces - mainly Americans, British and Canadian troops - started the invasion in Normandy. BIG thanks for that, since the world would be a lot different without the efforts of those millions of soldiers involved, and particularly those who died on the battle field. About 400.000 of them in the weeks after the invasion, including the German soldiers.

I've been there, in Normandy, and I can tell you it is worth the visit no matter if you are at all interested in war or history or not. If you have a chance, GO!!! There are sooooo many angles to the area and history; museums, cemeteries - also German one, towns and villages, nature, beaches, people, culture, architecture, food, wine, cider...

Wikipedia info about the landings from here.

Ice hockey surprise cooking in Stockholm!

If you are at all interested in ice hockey, check out what team Switzerland is doing in the world championships that are played in Helsinki and Stockholm at the moment. I can tell you Switzerland is expected to win the title as much as we expect their navy to attack Las Vegas. They have one NHL player, just like the Finnish team...

For some reason the Swiss team leads the Stockholm group and won Canada!!!

Let's go Canada let's go!

But what the muffin was the penalty for Team Finland before the 3rd goal...?

Well, we are talking about the under 20 years old men's World Championships in ice hockey. In the bronze medal game Team Canada is kicking Finnish ass by 3-0 after 2 rounds, but I really didn't like the call for the penalty before the 3rd goal. Assumption is that it will not change the result of the game and the hosting team will stay as somewhat heroes by winning the bronze medals - sending Finns home with a close-to-10-hours-flight...

Great games though, particularly I have loved the players' love and passion for the game!!! Passion, effort, level of input, love, fight, whatever you wanna call it, I can claim it is BIGGER than in average NHL game. Yep, these guys get peanuts, accommodation and meals paid while the NHL guys get on top some millions - or in minimum some hundreds of thousands of dollars.

On the other hand, the save that the Canadian goalie made in the 3rd round; such do NOT exist!!!

Lets talk about the Belge weather in Finland later. Perkele.

The 3rd period is ongoing and how ever it ends, I wish the winning team all the best without anyone hurting themselves :o)

I love sports - playing or watching!!!
======
PS for a picture gallery of the game, go here.
PPS I found a video link for the amazing save done by the Canadian goalie: http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/console?catid=35&id=147417

World Championships: Finland 14 - Canada 2

Let's go Canada, let's go!
...but not in this game.

It's again time for the World Championships and this time in Finland. The games are played in the ice hockey arenas, one of them being the very same that hosted Ice Hockey World Championships already 1997 in Helsinki, but yesterday's game was played in the home arena of Espoo Blues, my home team.

5 players and goalie in both teams with their sticks sharpened and ready to start the game. But soon the tention is over as Team Finland controls the game from the beginning and already after the first 20 minutes it is 4 - 0 and after 2nd 20 mins it is 8-0.

Hats off to Canada as they played (naturally) with a high moral through the game and it was awarded towards the end by 2 goals.

Yes, Finland has found a way to donimate a game in ice hockey arena against the mother country of ice hockey. However, unfortunately the game was not ice hockey but floorball...
But some of you thought it was ice hockey while reading - gotcha!!!

PS In few hours starts the fun of Finland Independence Day. You can follow it at http://www.yle.fi/linnanjuhlat/2010/

Happy Birthday Canada!

Today is the Canada Day - 143rd birthday of Canada, congratulations!
I have the pleasure to enjoy part of the day with people who carry the Canadian passport so let's see what type of celebration is to come.
I bet it will be far from the Finnish version on 6th December.
...we Finns tend to take these things quite seriously
(perhaps for reasons dating back at 1918 and 1939-1945).
Cheers - Santé - Kippis - Hölökynkölökyn!

USA and Canada are back!

If someone had doubts with USA and Canada performance in the ice hockey World Championships, I think the teams showed what they can do;

Even if Norway led 0-1 against Canada, they were beaten 12-1 after a dominating performance.
USA gave a lession to Kazakhstan with a 10-0 win and continued 4-0 against France...

Fairly small ice hockey country Switzerland continued a strong performance by beating Czech 3-2. Let's see how far they can go - so far looks good.

PS I posted about 2 weeks ago a photo of birch without any leaves. Well, heavy rain and sun has had the expected impact  or what would you say about the difference here?
