Movies with Mrs - Do it!

I am lucky enough to have a wife who activated me to go to the movies with her!

We booked the tickets online, took care of some things and went to collect the reserved tickets. Then we had time for a good salad lunch and a shop visit for the candy. The loose candy is something we have in Finland and Sweden with a good selection.
The movie we went to was "The King's Speech". It is based on a true story, connected to historical events and has many elements along the way that I loved. Let's see if Hollywood movie machine will award them with Oscar's tomorrow. They have my vote for one or several, I guess they will get some out of the 12 nominations...

I guess I've been brainwashed by BBC during the Brussels years hence I nowadays can enjoy a bit the British humour. There were moments when we were the only ones in the movie laughing to the fantastic situational comedy, comments that one just can't translate into Finnish subtitles. Or Swedish, as we have both Finnish and Swedish subtitles - this is a bilingual country.

Actually we have also 3rd official language, Sami.
Anyways, the movie was great, wonderful company, fantastic things before and after the movie so I am happy to recommend you something similar! On the other hand you can't reach the same level as us since you won't have as good company as we had ;o)

The official movie site is here and you can check out the trailer from here.

I must say the movie left me with a good feeling - main message could be "You can do it!"... And friends can and should challenge each others!

You can do it!!!

Horror Story - Part 5

Dear Friends,

The horror story is about to get a BIG turn today:
She is getting married!

Here is a clip from her hen party. Luckily it is in Finnish so that most of you don't understand - but still you get the picture in all of it's nastiness. For the ones who do understans Finnish, please note the part that starts right after 4 minutes - ette tainneetkaan tietää kuinka pieni tämä maailma onkaan...
For adults only, click here for the clip, compliments by Seiska.fi

Today's main news paper Helsingin Sanomat decided to downgrade their quality level and posted two Tuksu-quotes from Ms Johanna Tukiainen;

"Ykkösenä tulee usko, toivo ja rakkaus. Hemmottelu ja erotiikka ovat myös tärkeitä asioita, kuten timantit ja omistusasunto."
In English it is something like this;
"Number one in the faith, hope and love. Pampering and eroticism are also important issues, such as diamonds, and owning your apartment."

The other one tells something about the behaviour of the sisters - who used to dance together;
"Oma rakas siskoni ei pääse häihini, sillä hänen lääkärinsä on kieltänyt kaikki juhlat, joissa tarjoillaan alkoholia."
And the English version along the lines of;
"My dear sister can not come to my wedding, since her doctor has banned all celebrations where alcohol is served."

Have a great weekend - with or without wedding celebration!

PS Number of unique visitors is now over 3000, thank you for that! I still have to wonder the visitor from Isle of Man - and on the other hand I am grateful for seeing the flag that was totally new to me.

PSS I guess it's spring now, we have only -5C. But the snow is not melting...

Horror Story - Part 4

I must apologize - again - on behalf of my fellow countrywoman. But if you feel sympathy when someone else makes something they shouldn't, have a look at this...

Have a fantastic day, Helsinki Finland woke up with -22C...

Missing States of America, Spanish having siesta & Milestones

Dear Friends,
There has been some milestones in Flag Counter, the flag box on the left side, along the past weeks that I have not highlighted, sorry for that. It is your blog after all ;o)
  • 900th visitor from Finland
  • 400th visitor from US
  • 100th visitor from Sweden
  • 7000th visitor
Thank you for these!
...soon Belgium will also join the 100-club...
I have been wondering two things though. I know you can help me with one of them and let's see if we can wake up the siesta people...

Missing States of America;
In the Flag Counter is registered 46 out of 51 states, but which are the missing 5 states? Latest new one was Kansas that joined us yesterday.

No, I have not taken a list and cross-checked. That is a bit like admitting that you can not use a machine without a manual. Is there anyone who could name them, one or more?

If you can, just post a comment at the end of the posting. If you are shy, you can do it also anonymous.

Siesta time?
For certain reasons I have more than average interest in Spain. The number of visitors from Spain has though been stable in 42 for a while, so let's see if we could wake them up with this writing. You can check the development by the number next to the Spanish flag on the left side.

No matter if you are working in a bodega or Picasso Museum in Malaga, football fan of Real Madrid and Christiano Ronaldo, city playa lover in Barcelona without knowing who Lionel Messi is, play tourist in Fuengirola, are a fisherman who enables pescados y mariscos, gambas pil-pil, boquerones fritos, Almejas, Rosada or what you have, perhaps this piece of text got you on this site for the higly sophisticated, scientific test ;o)
Gracias por su visita!!!

And for the ones who missed that class in school, this is what it looks like;

PS My heart is broken, I just heard Malaga football team in La Liga is on the last place. Vamonos blue & white, show them what you have!!!

Looking for a great cafe in Espoo? It is there already: Kaisan Cafe

For about 20 years there has been a fantastic cafe at Tapiola, Espoo, Finland - my hoods. A wonderful couple opened it at the twist of 80/90's and since then they have been a legend.

The show is ran by Raimo and Kaisa, hard working, dedicated and people with BIG hearts. They have been working there themselves every day, in the early years only Monday to Friday, weekends off and always having a winter holiday week and in the summer closed for about 4 weeks.

That's respecting work/life balance while running your own business that is 110% depended on having your shop open!

At some point they opened for Saturdays and now they seem to have taken a HUGE step: They were open during the winter holiday week but neither of them were working! That means they have been able to build a team that they can trust and let them run the show, that's how you recognize a good manager from an average one!!!

There has been a killer, standard recipe for the success: Something people consider worth paying for. In their case it has been always a GIGANTIC, great tasting cinnemon roll, a korvapuusti! I think the starting price while opening was about 5,50 Finnish Marks and today's price is 1,70 Euros. Not bad during the time of 5 freaking Euro coffee cup ;o) Their standard, black coffee is by the way 1,30 Euros.

I can recommend them with all my heart for coffee + sweet or salty pit-stop on site, cake (sweet or salty) ordering for what-ever-party or just for a cup of soda. But don't expect to get double-wrapped-espresso-capuccino-frozen-cinnemon-twisted-special-double-foam-super-duper-coffee-wanna-be-starbuck-coffee-options, but focus on the stuff you have with your plain, dull Finnish coffee.

The price is not a show-stopper for you visit, or what do you think about this;
3 x GIANT cinnemon roll
1 x BIG slice of cake
2 x Hot chocolate
1 x Coffee, black
1 x 0,5 Liters of Coca Cola -bottle
...and the sum is...
12,90 Euros

Still, it's not about the price...!

Median pahoinpitelyä!

Guys, this is continuing a bit about the why-the-heck-is-she-on-the-tabloid-babe I wrote earlier about.

Joopajoo, ehkäpä taisin osua aiemmin oikeaan. Oleellinen kysymys varmaan edelleenkin kuuluu "miksi".

Tässä compliments by Youtube ennakkomakua tulevasta. Päättele itse sisällön laatutaso;

Aiemmin minulla oli aiheesta muutama ajatus joilla uskoin näkemykseni olleen perusteltu. Eikä tämä viimeisin varmaankaan heikennä argumentointiani...;

Tälle seuraavalle toiminnalle en löytänyt parempaa kuvausta kuin horror-jumppa;
http://withlovefromtheworld.blogspot.com/2011/02/niinpa-i-rest-my-case.html

Happy "International Mother Language Day" - Hyvää kansainvälistä äidinkielen päivää!

Regards from Helsinki -14C, while the wind is 4 m/s and humidity 68,3 %, it feels like –21C. And it did. Up North in Sodankylä, Lapland -17C, wind 3 m/s and humidity 79,5 %, feels like -24C

Helsingissä -14C, kun tuuli 4 m/s ja kosteus 68,3 %, tuntuu kuin –21C. Sodankylässä -17C, kun tuuli 3 m/s ja kosteus 79,5 %, tuntuu kuin -24C

Happy "International Mother Language Day"!

I had to do some checking to make sure the title was correct, as I've learnt to use "mother tongue" and "native language" terms.

To the topic...
February 21st has been established as International Mother Language Day by both United Nations and Unesco. The day dates back to 1952 when a number of University of Dhaka students were killed by the Pakistani police and army in Dhaka during Bengali language protests.

There are about 7000 languages spoken in the world, while it has been estimated even 90% to vanish by the end of this century. And that's a shame!
I think everyone should have a right to a mother tongue, native language or what every you wanna call it, and ways to maintain it. I know I have been a bit bad parent since I'm violating the mother tongue of my children:

My daughter has studied in Englis as of mid 2nd grade and my son since kindergarten. Yep, now they have a lot better chance to be professionals in Finnish - which is not the case in those families that have adopted English as the language at home during their years abroad. That despite of the fact that both parents are pure Finnish speakers.

More info in many languages like Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, Spanish  - but not in Finnish at:

But how can that 90% be true...?

Maailmassa on noin 7000 elävää kieltä, joista 90 % uskotaan häviävän tämän vuosisadan loppuun mennessä.

http://www.un.org/en/events/motherlanguageday/

Mutta miten tuo 90% voi olla totta...?

Veeery cold morning, or how would you rate -25C...? Early wake up call to go and cheer my son in his football game - or soccer as some of you know the game.

Yesterday I forgot to use the fantastic feature in the creation of Mr Ford: I didn't set the heater on to make sure the car would be nice, warm and ready for the ride. Well, now I got a good reminder to do it in the future:
The damn car didn't start, perkele!

We were in a rush to get to the game but luckily the other car in the family - more American than the Mr Ford's baby - started and we got to the game on time.

The temp came down during the day and the Ford-baby almost started but no, it didn't. The other American cousin, Chrysler, came to help out and with the cables the Ford-baby finally started. It was not a piece of cake as the cables I have were a bit too thin, even though they were for diesel cars.

Yes, the cabels for diesel car jump start are thicker so be aware of this when you do such stuff. Also the batteries are different so please check a pro before going for operation. And I'm not the pro you need.

The good thing for today was that after getting certain planned deeds done during the afternoon, we had time to take pulkka & sledge and go to have some winter fun. It's funny how should-be-an-adult becomes a kid when given a chance. Perhaps the speed effect has got something to do with it.

And the sledge I was using, my toboggan that I bought in Lillehammer, Norway years ago. Gotta be careful, a colleague broke her coccyx in a toboggan race we had during the same trip I got the sledge from.

I've got a pic of this great piece of snow-machine but you gotta wait for it. Just like you gotta wait for the story and pics of yesterday's little trip on the sea. On foot.

PS What makes a teenager to ask "could we open this pack of biscuits?" just before going to bed? Beats me, but luckily she was smart enough to smile after getting a surprising negative answer...

Picasso moon

I told you that the moon is not what you think. And yes, if you have had some absint, there is a link between that and the shape.
 Without the absint, it could look like this and in my eyes it looks fantastic - not least since I have seen it live!
Have a fantastic weekend!!!

Just another day into the office - and back

Dear Friends,

I can claim that quite many of you have no idea what "just another day into the office - and back" can mean in real. It can be rough roads with loads of snow, like in these few pics from about 1,5 weeks ago.

A bit of snow on the road - and on the window
 Hold on, I can see the airport on the right side. Or I can't but it's there.
 Yes, the main runways of Helsinki Airport are behind the fence!
But that's history from looong time ago as I said. Now we should focus on something closer to the moment I guess. That means today;

Here are pics from my ride - just another day towards the office...

I have been looking at this pipe many times and finally this morning I was able to risk it and take a few photos while driving 80 km/h on an icy road
 I'd say it is beautiful in it's rudeness, ugliness and dirtyness
 I wonder if there is a deeper message in this photo
 Trip continues and there is another truck stopped by the road. This one had lost some liquids, what ever you call it in English. Perhaps the cooler froze and broke...
Hmmm, the temp was quite mild when I left home, barely below -20C which in this case means -4 Farenheits.
 How surprising there was another car by the road - right after the truck I missed to take a photo of.
No wonder, temp was down a bit in this area, -25C. And as you can see on the photos with the temperature, the radio channel had changed from the local public http://www.yle.com/ , the Finnish broadcasing company's channel. into commercial channel that plays only Finnish pop/rock - and have a pretty good morning show from 6 to 10 am. Yes, sometimes they talk too much crap and play too often the same damn songs but certain parts cover the rest of the crap.

And I gotta admit I cruise between the channels a lot in the morning. Yes, a lot. Gimme a bad song or boring story and I'm gone. Actually it is vice versa, I prefer to listen to talking shows rather than music in the morning. That is when I'm alone in the car - which is usually the case.
 Anyways, while writing or driving the temp went down to -27,5C.
 Damn, I just got the pic and it keeps going down like Bruce Springsteen... -28,0C
Ain't this beautiful after all? The speed limit sign is the same as you saw above with the airport on the right side - with visibility at minimum. Now it is a lot better, and so is the light;
For months I have been coming into the office and leaving home while it has been dark, but fortunately I am often in the mornings late arrival so I get to see our friend before closing myself inside the four walls.
Yeah, bring in the sun as I am ready for it!
...well, who isn't... But still I think it was a good option to park the snow white car on the mild hill, just in case Mr Ford fails with the heater ;o) And note this pic was taken before 08:30 in the morning, sun is up.
The Helsinki Airport terminal is there just below the sun
But before getting inside and able to take off the jacket, the car thermometer went down to -29C which equals to -20,2 Farenheit. Keep it coming baby, it's winter and I guess it's again time for the sauna...
To finish off, I thought I'd share a FANTASTIC photo with you. It was taken only few minutes ago from the door behind my back, same view that I have from the couch I am writing this on.
BEAUTIFUL!
Almost like a painting by Picasso, so I gotta think if I'd take a few more drinks and paint such myself instead of posting the pic... It also reveals a new truth about our solar system. Perhaps the moon is not as we think...

Come back tomorrow = Saturday in the afternoon and you should see some great pics!
All and all, please learn to drive on icy roads - or stay home!!!

Just another winter day

This morning I was sitting in the car after 6:30 am with -20C behind the windscreen.

I'm heading towards the gym for a morning exercixe while a song in the finishes and the DJ says only 2 simple words with a pretty strong opinion abou the wearher - that had lasted for several days. And is about to last longer.

Even though he is a Finn and the channel language is Finnish, his exact words were:
"Fuck, it's freezing!"
...and without further explanations starts "Start Me Up" by Roll...

I was started, and I guess also few others who were listening.
Radio Rock, Finland 94.9 MHz or http://www.radiorock.fi/

Enjoy the weather, no matter what it is like!
Navy "taxi" in Helsinki

PS I was again grateful to Mr Ford for enabling me just to step into the car and take off without scraping the windows. The saved time I spent at the gym writing this ;o)

Sunday, February 13, 2011

Thank you Mr Ford!

I absolutely love the fuel heater in my car!

We are back with cold weather with about -15C, and since today has been a day of multiple stops, surprisingly I have used the heater close to 10 times. Also this morning there was no need to scrape the windows from ice as they were clean at the time I wanted.

During the week I had the car parked for 2 days and as I also then knew what time I was about to leave, clear windows and a warm car. Niiiiiiice!

On the other hand I perhaps should have apologized just sitting in the car and taking off after a day of heavy snowfall, while my colleagues were busy scraping windows and brushing snow away.

Thank you Mr Ford!

How about consulting a native speaker...?

I know I should do that too, and I will if I need to print something permanent. Here are some beautiful examples of the language errors - just like I posted some time ago in Finnish.

In a Bangkok temple:

IT IS FORBIDDEN TO ENTER A WOMAN, EVEN A FOREIGNER, IF DRESSED AS A MAN.

Cocktail lounge, Norway:
LADIES ARE REQUESTED NOT TO HAVE CHILDREN IN THE BAR.

Doctors office, Rome:
SPECIALIST IN WOMEN AND OTHER DISEASES.

Dry cleaners, Bangkok:

CUSTOMERS WHO FIND OUR WAITRESSES RUDE OUGHT TO SEE THE MANAGER.

On the main road to Mombassa, leaving Nairobi:
TAKE NOTICE: WHEN THIS SIGN IS UNDER WATER, THIS ROAD IS IMPASSABLE.

On a poster at Kencom:
ARE YOU AN ADULT THAT CANNOT READ? IF SO WE CAN HELP.

In a City restaurant:
OPEN SEVEN DAYS A WEEK AND WEEKENDS.

In a cemetery:

Tokyo hotel's rules and regulations:
GUESTS A RE REQUESTED NOT TO SMOKE OR DO OTHER DISGUSTING BEHAVIOURS IN BED.

On the menu of a Swiss restaurant:
OUR WINES LEAVE YOU NOTHING TO HOPE FOR.

Niinpä - I rest my case!

Turha julkkis!

After that clip no-one can challenge the core message in my previous post:
Don't bother!

PS It takes again a short while to get similar numbers;

Olen todella pahoillani - I feel so sorry!

Olen todella pahoillani ihmisten puolesta, jotka ovat tilanteessa jossa tämä kyseinen esimerkkihenkilö on;

Puhumattakaan naimisiin menosta. Toivottavasti ehkäisy on kunnossa!!!

So?
Erään maailmanlaajuisen kirjan sananlaskuissa sanotaan jotain tähän suuntaan:
Parempi talon räystään alla kuin pahan akan katon alla. Sama pätee luonnollisesti molempiin suuntiin.

Vaikuttaa siltä että myös taloudellisesti olisi parempi olla olematta kimpassa;

Tuo rahan kiinni laittaminen häihin valmistautumiseen on toinen juttu;

How do I put this in English so that you would get the idea...?

We have a celebrity - or I'd say wanna-be celebrity who has made a fool out of herself. Unfortunately she has also been outside Finland and in one interview she mentioned even Mickey Rourke so Mickey, if you are out there: I sincerely apologize on behalf of my fellow countrywoman!!!

I try to translate the key story of what the wanna-be-lady has said in an interview;
"He (to-be husband) is not a gentleman. He is uneducated, pathological lier and a bum (lives off with other people's money), all he wants is publicity.
I am getting married since I don't want to be alone.
--- If I would be Ms Nobody without media attention, I would have separated from Arto (his name a long time ago. He is violent, especially when he is drunk (and we Finns tend to be drunk, heavily, quite often - and he has got violent history with his ex). Still I am not afraid of him, as he is a small man who does not have any muscles."

WHY THE HELL ARE YOU MARRYING HIM???
Ladies, please: Do not punish yourselves even if (like in this case) your capacity both on mental and physical side is what it is. Usually the reason for the situation like this is in the selections made in the past by .... yourself.

There are options, it is even cheaper to be by yourself. You can easily get yourself wined and dined - max expected payback is some intimacy. And that you can get with money...

Treat yourself with respect - and please keep such cases hidden from the public! I feel sorry for her.

PS 100th visitor from Denmark and 800th from Finland - again small milestones for the blog. Let's see if something happens with the visitors from 45 out of 51 states in US. I have no clue which are the missing ones - if you spot them please let me know!

Musta Motorola on paras, sanoi Kongon kuningas...

Sorry guys, impossible to translate - this is about the beatiful features in
Finnish language...

Olisiko tästä mahdollisen harmaan viikon tai hetken piristäjäksi?
Suomen kieli on niin monimuotoinen ja -selitteinen. Ajatelkaapas vaikkapa
näitä esimerkkejä:

-Joskus haikarat näyttävät kurjilta.

-Kiropraktikot vetävät lonkkaa.

-Mielisairaalassa ottamani kuvat olivat pääosin onnistuneita, vaikka
joukossa oli muutamia tärähtäneitäkin.

-Taksifirman perustamisen perustaksi riittää perustaksi.

-Arkkitehdeille sattui vahinko; oli käytävä vessassa.

-Saunottajan lempiasiakas on vastapäinen mies.

-Mitä teit puolityhjälle pullolleni?
= Vein vajaan.

-Huonon pidon vuoksi 10 panssarivaunua piti teloittaa.

-Ette tulleet kutsuntoihin,miksi?

-Suutari toivoi saavansa paljon kanta-asiakkaita.

savupiipun.

-Naamiaisissa haarniskapukuinen mies oli kokoajan pelti kiinni.

-Kuuntelen etupäässä rokkia, sanoi linja-auton kuljettaja.

-Kumpi on parempi hevonen vai auto?
=Koneista ei ole mihinkään.

-Enpäs lentänyt retkuun, sanoi kärpänen kun pummia
väisti.

Ja tässä vielä pilkunn****joiden erikoinen:
Tsaari vastasi armon anomukseen mutta unohti laittaa pilkun:
"Armoa ei Siperiaan."

Loistavaa viikkoa - Have a fabulous week!!!
